Pris // Blade Runner

Pris // Blade Runner

Completed: December 2008
Worn to: Arisia Con ’09

Inspiration

Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time, not least because it’s one of the few film adaptations of Phillip K. Dick that doesn’t absolutely suck (Hollywood, please stop ruining PKD’s short stories!). I love science fiction – particularly the dark, gritty vision of the future common in many sci-fi flicks from the 1980s.The central conflict in Blade Runner is one of identity – the replicants are truly just fighting for their own right to existence. I found Pris, with her mix of melancholy and crazy, especially appealing.

A few years ago, it was fairly common to see Pris cosplays. Recently, it seems she’s dropped back into obscurity but I hope to start seeing her again at sci-fi cons!

Construction

The construction on this costume is fairly straight forward – the undershirt is made out of a sheer mesh fabric, the top is ruched black velvet with glitter embellishment, and the shorts/hot pants are made out of 4-way stretch black vinyl. The gartered stockings and knit legwarmers were purchased.

Photos

Though I made this costume back in 2008, I really didn’t have the opportunity to take photos of it until 2013. My good friend and wonderful photography Jonathon D. Courtot was kind enough to shoot these pictures of me on a rooftop in Burbank, CA. It was a particularly dark night and the only lighting we had was car headlights – hopefully we were able to replicate (get it, lol!) the dark, monochromatic feel of many of the scenes in the film!
